Higgs boson excitement: Almost palpable

Scientists hope to report the discovery of the Higgs boson particle by the end of 2012. Such a discovery would help explain the composition of the universe.?

Physicists at a U.S. laboratory said on Monday they have come tantalizingly close to proving the existence of the elusive subatomic Higgs boson - often called the "God particle" because it may bring mass and order to the universe.

The announcement by the Fermi National Accelerator Lab outside Chicago came two days before physicists at CERN, the European particle accelerator near Geneva, are set to unveil their own findings in the Higgs hunt. CERN houses the world's most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The Fermilab scientists found hints of the Higgs in the debris from trillions of collisions between beams of protons and anti-protons over 10 years at the lab's now-shuttered Tevatron accelerator.

But the evidence still fell short of the scientific threshold for proof of the discovery of the particle, they said, in that the same collision debris hinting at the existence of the Higgs could also come from other subatomic particles.

"This is the best answer that is out there at the moment," said physicist Rob Roser of Fermilab, which is run by the U.S. Department of Energy. "The?Tevatron data strongly point toward the existence of the Higgs boson, but it will take results from the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in Europe to establish a firm discovery."

Scientists have worked long and hard to prove the existence of the Higgs boson, the final piece of a model proposed four decades ago laying out the basic building blocks of matter in the universe.

The Higgs particle's presumed power to confer mass seems to endow it with the power of creation itself, which helped lead to its "God particle" nickname.

Many physicists loathe the term, fretting that it makes their discipline seem self-aggrandizing.

Physicists not connected to Fermilab expressed cautious optimism that the long-sought particle had finally been found.

"These intriguing hints from the Tevatron appear to support the results from the LHC shown at CERN in December," said Dan Tovey, professor of particle physics at the University of Sheffield in Britain.

"The results are particularly important because they use a completely different and complementary way of searching for the Higgs boson. This gives us more confidence that what we are seeing is really evidence of new physics rather than just a statistical fluke," Tovey added.

Tovey said scientists will have to wait until Wednesday for the latest results from the European scientists before "getting the full picture" concerning the Higgs boson.

'A Nice Result'

CERN spokesman James Gillies called Fermilab's findings "a nice result," but added that "it will be interesting to see how it lines up with CERN's results on Wednesday. Nature is the final arbiter so we'll have to be a little more patient before we know for sure whether we've found the Higgs."

Tom LeCompte, a scientist at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois who works at CERN and knows the results, said he was confident the Higgs would be shown to exist, or not exist, this year. But he would not say if the findings to be unveiled Wednesday would be definitive.

"I know 2012 is the year. I can't tell you July is the month," LeCompte said.

Others were less cautious. "This is the most exciting week in physics history," said theoretical physicist Joe Lykken of Fermilab.

The Higgs particle is the final quarry in a hunt that began some 40 years ago, when physicists assembled what is now known as the Standard Model. The model is considered the culmination of a quest for the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces that determine how they interact, a search that began some 2,400 years ago with Greek philosopher Democritus' hypothesis that everything is composed of indivisible atoms.

According to the Standard Model, matter is composed of various combinations of six leptons, including the well-known electron and the ghostly neutrino, and six quarks, to which physicists have given whimsical names such as "charm," "bottom," and "strange." The protons at the core of atoms, for instance, are composed of two "up" quarks and one "down" quark.

The hottest convertibles of the year

The Porsche Boxster S is an entry-level coupe suitable for middle-aged accountants and dentists, right? Not exactly.

Think more along the lines of James Dean.

?It?s a sexy car because of him,? Porsche spokesman Dave Engelman says. The $64,100 coupe is said to evoke the iconic Porsche 550 Spyder driven by the ?Rebel Without A Cause? star. ?They were designed as all-out sports cars with no compromise.?

Forbes.com slideshow: See the 10 hottest convertibles

Indeed. Not that Joe the Accountant couldn?t drive it, of course, but the Boxster offers so much more than that. Three hundred fifteen horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds are nothing to laugh at. Not to mention a top speed of nearly 175 miles per hour.

And if you ask a pro he?ll tell you that for most civilians, the mid-engined Boxster is much more fun to drive on the track than its 911 sibling.

?The Boxster is a great car ? it?s way more manageable than the 911,? Patrick Long told me once at a party in New York. He would know ? Long drives the Porsche 911 GT3-RSR for Flying Lizard Motorsports in the American Le Mans Series.

All this to say that the Boxster S is a perfect fit for our list of 10 hot convertibles on the market this summer.

This year?s group includes cars from the likely suspects (think Aston Martin, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz) along with a few surprises. Some are impractical but exceedingly attractive. Others look more demure and will work for a weekend jaunt with friends. But they?re all relatively expensive ? the $60,000 Ford Shelby GT is the cheapest thing on the list ? and muscle-car buffs and exotics-lovers alike will agree they?re all hot rides. (We chose the winners on this list from model-year 2012 or newer cars.)

To drop or not?
Convertibles have been around for more than a century (they were the original horseless carriages, after all ? just ask Gottlieb Daimler) but once conventional vehicles came about their popularity waned. Sales nationwide may actually be slipping even more, thanks to the growing popularity of panoramic sunroofs and targa tops.

According to the research firm RL Polk, convertible sales typically account for nearly 2 percent of the auto market but were running closer to 1.2 percent last year. The Chevrolet Camaro was the top-selling convertible last year, accounting for 7,530 car registrations. The Ford Mustang was second, with convertible sales of 6,645.

On the luxury side, the highest-selling convertible, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, sold just of 3,446 units last year; the BMW 328 convertible sold just 2,867 units. But convertibles are still an important part of each brand, says Lonnie Miller, an analyst for Polk, because they act as ?halo? vehicles ? they attract attention and excitement. Even if someone doesn?t actually buy the roadster they walk into a showroom to drool over, at least it got them into the showroom.

?It?s a feel-good car,? Miller says.

Hard or soft?
For those who do opt to drop-top, the biggest question often comes down to form: Which is better, a soft top or a hard top? Switch from a cloth top to hard top in any given cabriolet and it?ll affect everything ? performance, structural soundness and (most importantly for many consumers) aesthetics ? because of the difference in weight and structure. Each style has its merits ? it just depends on what you want.

Hard tops like the one available in the $105,500 Mercedes-Benz SL550 are quieter and more durable, especially for drivers who live in cold climates. They?re also generally accepted as better-looking when the top is raised. But they?re also heavier, which means hardtop cars are slower and less fuel-efficient than they would be with cloth tops.

A cloth top on something like Ford?s Shelby Mustang means more space in the trunk and a lighter (more efficient) vehicle. It?s well-suited to drivers who won?t likely need to put up the roof very often. But they often look dingy and cheap when they?re deployed, and they?re usually more complicated to engage than the push-button hardtop. They also tend to be slightly louder than something hard, despite huge gains in recent years to make the seals more sound-proof.

One of the best in the ragtop range is Bentley?s arch Continental GTC. It has 500 horsepower, with a top speed of 195 miles per hour and a 0-to-60 sprint time of 4.5 seconds. Inside it has unique bulls-eye air vents and wood-framed organ stop controls, Mulliner diamond-quilted leather seats and a three-spoke leather steering wheel with aluminum inlays. Price: Just under $200,000, for the base version.

It?s a handsome car, to be sure. There?s just one catch, and it goes for everything on this list: The Continental goes faster with the roof up.

Video Conferencing ? A Tech Gift To Global Businesses - Genecast ...

Business leaders are often under intense pressure to be in several places at the same time. They rely on advanced communications technology to maintain contact and control across their organization as they travel. While smart phones and tablets have enhanced the mobile workspace, it is video conferencing that will provide the biggest leap in productivity and biggest reduction in travel. Video can dramatically improve communications accuracy and understanding, and therefore decrease the need to be there in person.

?

Business-grade video conferencing has made meaningful, face-to-face conversation over vast distances a simple communications transaction, like dialing an internal extension. With high quality audio and HD video every comment, every facial expression is captured to deliver more accurate communication. Importantly, modern video endpoints are easy to use, and with striking design they sit well in the office.? ?

?

Whereas video was once the preserve of large corporations, today any business can afford to deploy video throughout all levels of the organization. Video endpoints range from mobile to desktop to office and boardroom units. Video enabled IP phones can be provided to employees at the same cost as a regular phone. Higher level units with large screens and touch-control pads sit easily on manager?s desks, and premium units with multiple screens are located in high-end collaboration rooms. Pervasive video throughout an organization will improve teamwork, collaboration and accelerate decision-making.

?

Core video infrastructure can be based on an organization?s own premises, or it be hosted in the cloud and video provided as a subscription based service. There are advantages to both approaches, it all depends on what is right for your organization.

?

Today video conferencing is about easy to use endpoints that are seamlessly part of an employee?s workspace. They are easy to use, integrated with the unified communications network, and deliver a high quality video experience every time. It means you can be in a virtual meeting in Sydney, then San Francisco, all while you?re sitting in your office in Melbourne. ?

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian troops flushed out rebels from a key Damascus suburb Saturday, regaining control of a key area just outside the capital after a 10-day assault that left dozens dead, hundreds wounded and caused a major humanitarian crisis.

The relentless offensive against Douma forced residents and fighters to flee, leaving a trail of destruction and bodies in the streets, activists said.

In Zamalka, another suburb of Damascus, activists said more than 30 people were killed and many others wounded Saturday evening when a mortar shell struck a car that exploded as a funeral procession was taking place.

The exact circumstances were not immediately clear. It was not known who fired the mortar.

World powers meeting in Geneva to push for an end to the bloodshed accepted a U.N.-brokered peace plan for Syria on Saturday, but left open whether President Bashar Assad could be part of a transitional government.

The sprawling suburb of Douma, on the outskirts of Damascus, has been a hotbed of dissent against Assad's regime since the start of the uprising in March 2011. Securing control of the suburb for a sustained period would be a significant triumph for the regime.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and local activist Mohammed Saeed said regime forces recaptured Douma late Friday. The latest offensive was the worst of several assaults on the area, the Observatory said.

"The situation in Douma is catastrophic. The suburb is badly destroyed," Saeed said via Skype, adding that he was among dozens of residents who fled on foot through the fields to safer areas for fear of being captured by security forces.

The state-run SANA news agency reported the government was still pursuing "armed terrorist groups" in its effort to "cleanse" Douma, using its term for the rebels, noting that dozens had been killed and their weapons seized.

Central Damascus is an Assad stronghold, but regime forces have battled to control the ring of suburbs and settlements in the surrounding countryside. The army launches frequent offensives in the suburbs only to see them slip back under rebel control.

Saeed said troops stormed two makeshift hospitals where seriously wounded people were being treated. "The doctors fled and the wounded remained. Their fate is unknown," he said.

The latest violence came as representatives of global and regional powers met Saturday in an increasingly desperate bid to agree on a peaceful formula to end the bloody crisis in Syria, including Assad's role in a transitional government.

The talks hosted by the United Nations at its European headquarters in Geneva were seen as a last-ditch attempt to salvage the peace plan brokered by the U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

The U.S. backed away from demands that Assad be excluded, hoping the concession would encourage Russia to put greater pressure on its longtime ally to end the violent crackdown that the opposition says has claimed over 14,000 lives.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton insisted that Assad would still have to go, saying "it is now "incumbent on Russia and China to show Assad the writing on the wall."

Moscow had refused to back a provision that would call for Assad to step aside, insisting that outsiders cannot order a political solution for Syria.

Annan said following talks that "it is for the people of Syria to come to a political agreement."

Syrian opposition groups also planned to meet Monday in Cairo to try to agree on a common vision to deal with the next stage in the conflict, Arab League deputy chief Ahmed ben Heli told reporters.

He said the foreign ministers from the five permanent U.N. Security Council members ? the United States, Britain, China, France and Russia also were invited, as were Annan and envoys from Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey and Tunisia.

Previous attempts in the past weeks to hold a similar meeting at the Arab League's headquarters in Cairo failed because of differences between opposition groups.

The death toll is rising daily as the conflict becomes increasingly militarized. Fighting also has left several rebel strongholds facing dire conditions.

Douma's residents suffer from daily shelling as well as shortages of food, electricity and running water, according to the Observatory. It also cited a shortage of cooking gas that has prevented people from cooking food since the latest campaign began on June 21.

The Observatory said about 100 families, mostly women and children, remain in Douma as men had to flee because of waves of arrests. Dozens of wounded people also are holed up in shelters and need urgent treatment after troops took over the main hospital in the area and damaged it, the Observatory said.

"Many of the wounded have died because of bad medical conditions," the Observatory said.

In other violence Saturday, a car bomb exploded in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, damaging a government building but causing no casualties since the building was closed for the weekend, according to SANA.

Activists also reported shelling by government troops and clashes between rebels and government forces in the central provinces of Hama and Homs, the eastern region of Deir el-Zour as well as Idlib and Aleppo to the north. Scores were reported killed in violence Saturday.

On the importance of names, part two. What's the difference between a boat and a ship?

I?ve been asked by the crew to stop calling the Knorr a boat. It?s a ship. ?A ship can pick up a boat,? they tell me. The Knorr is also the largest ship in her fleet. Respect, my friends.

In fact, one intrepid questioner asked about this exact distinction. Maybe she was trying to tell me something.

What?s the difference between a boat and a ship? Jenny from Walla Walla Washington

According to The Straight Dope:

?Among sailing vessels, the distinction between ships and boats is that a ship is a square-rigged craft with at least three masts, and a boat isn?t. With regard to motorized craft, a ship is a large vessel intended for oceangoing or at least deep-water transport, and a boat is anything else.?

Basically, a ship can carry a boat, but a boat cannot carry a ship.

This is a boat. (Via: Flickr)

This is a ship.

Or, if you prefer you analogies in LEGO form.

This is a boat. (Via: Flickr)

This is a ship. (Via: Flickr)

The Guardian asked its readers about the difference, and got a couple of great answers.

?One answer is that ? a ship?s captain gets annoyed if you refer to his vessel as a boat, but a boat?s captain does not get annoyed if you refer to his vessel as a ship.

Brian Robinson, Brentwood, Essex

I should also note that the Knorr has a small boat attached to it, which means she can definitely carry a boat. Thus, it?s a ship. So, from now on, the R/V Knorr will take her proper place as a ship on this blog, and not a boat.
