South African platinum major Anglo Platinum (AngloPlat) has launched a community-based information programme to convey messages about company ethics to its employees.

The advertisements contain messages related to mine health and safety, HIV/Aids prevention methods and what constitutes a good worker. Star Radio also produces special editions that include 90-minute cassette tapes.

The messages are believed to reach 20 000 Anglo Platinum mineworkers a day.

AngloPlat says that traditionally it has been difficult for it to communicate to all its employees through one communications platform. The CDs meet the challenge by providing a communications platform that is not only accessible to 20 000 mineworkers, but also overcomes the challenges of noisy environments and the employees? busy work schedules. Mineworkers take the CDs home and listen to them at their leisure.

In order to grip, engage and hold mineworkers? attention, informative messages are interspaced with popular music that the mineworkers enjoy.

To speak directly to the heart of the listeners, the messages are communicated in English, Setswana and Sepedi at more than ten mines situated in the North West and in Limpopo.

India vs China: Which Has a Bigger Reform Challenge?

Both India and China are in the middle of their worst economic slowdowns in many years. If IMF projections?for 2012 prove accurate, China?s GDP will advance at the slowest pace since 1999, and India?s at the slowest pace since 2002. There is a lot to learn from these downturns. One is that economies, no matter how promising, can?t grow at fantastically high rates indefinitely, with GDP ascending in neat, upward straight lines. We also learn that ?decoupling? is still not a reality (especially for China). Despite rising domestic demand and burgeoning ties of trade and investment between emerging economies, the developing world is still connected to the developed, and what happens in the U.S.?and Europe still matters a great deal.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from the slowdown, however, is that even rapidly growing economies can?t be complacent. Though it is true that the poor performance of emerging economies everywhere is a function of the weakness of the global economy generally, that is only part of the story. Both India and China have been slowing down because neither country has done what they need to keep growth going, in a healthy and sustainable fashion.

The big question going forward is: Will they?

The answer matters to everybody. If India and China get their reforms right, the world economy will be better able to create jobs. These two markets are becoming crucial to major companies in the U.S. and Europe. Yum! Brands, which controls the KFC and Pizza Hut fast-food chains, now earns roughly half its revenue in China, for example. If India and China don?t move ahead on reform, the global economy will lose out on a key source of growth that is vital as the U.S. and Europe struggle with debt, deficits and unemployment.

In many respects, the sort of reform necessary in the two economies is similar. Both require greater liberalization. India must continue to dismantle the leftover red tape of the License Raj to free up private companies and open up to greater levels of foreign investment. China has to scale back its overbearing state enterprises, allow more competition in certain key sectors (like finance) and deregulate prices (especially interest rates) to improve efficiency, corporate performance, and resource allocation. Both also have to do more to build a stronger middle class. In China, that means improving labor rights and creating a better social safety net (such as improved healthcare and pension systems). India has to double down on anti-poverty programs by improving the effectiveness of the civil service and bolstering education and other social services. Both have to stamp down corruption. China ranks an unimpressive 75^th (out of 183 countries) on Transparency International?s Corruption Perceptions Index,?and India an embarrassing 95^th. Recent scandals, like the fall of Chongqing boss Bo Xilai in China, have exposed just how serious the corruption problem is.

Yet neither country has been responding to their reform challenges boldly enough. Both administrations face stiff political opposition to reform. In India, there are too many politicians still stuck in 1960s thinking about economics who fiercely resist the realities of reform and make it difficult for the government to press forward with any urgency. China, too, has powerful opponents to greater reform, especially state enterprises, who benefit from subsidies and protected markets, and the bureaucracy, which will resist any loss of authority in liberalization efforts. There is also no clear consensus within the Chinese Communist Party as to what kind of economy China should have going forward, with some factions arguing for greater openness and other fearful of giving up too much state control.

Despite the opposition, however, both countries have been making progress. After a long stall in reform,?India?s new finance minister, P. Chidambaram, has unleashed a torrent of measures in recent weeks that further opened the retail, airline and insurance sectors to foreign investment. I?ve been impressed recently with China?s economic policymaking amid the downturn. Rather than deluging the economy with another tidal wave of credit and spending (as the state did during the 2008 economic crisis), the government has been much more prudent, encouraging further lending and fast-tracking some infrastructure projects but not going overboard. This has boosted hopes that the leadership if finally committing itself to ?rebalancing,? or shifting the sources of growth away from investment and towards consumption. There are early signs that?difficult shift is starting to take place. In the first three-quarters of the year, consumption contributed more to growth than investment.

We should not, however, get our hopes up. The Indian government has recently picked some low-hanging reform fruit but the tough stuff remains ahead. India can no longer afford to suffer without proper power or rural development?because of a resistant and ineffective bureaucracy. ?New Delhi?s biggest challenge is making the state more competent and capable of implementing reform.

China?s leaders say the right things ? outgoing President Hu Jintao spoke of fighting corruption and boosting consumption in his speech?before this month?s 18^th Communist Party Congress ? but we?ve heard these promises again and again and again and real progress has been slow, at best. The new party leadership announced on Thursday also leaves doubts that reforms will come quickly enough. Prominent reformers, most notably Guangdong provincial party chief Wang Yang, were left off the new seven-member Standing Committee. Yet China may have an even bigger reform challenge than India. New Delhi needs to continue and expand?what it has been doing for the past 20 years ? freeing India?s entrepreneurial energies through liberalization. China, however, has the tough task of completely altering its growth model, ?from a state-led, investment-heavy system to a more open and balanced system with stronger rule of law. Despite the recent promising data, that process is still in its early days.

Neither country can afford to foot-drag. If India can?t get its growth rate up,?the country won?t be able to rapidly reduce poverty or create jobs for the millions of youngsters who enter the workforce each year. China?s current growth model, meanwhile, is creating dangerous distortions in the economy ? excess capacity, high levels of debt ? that could eventually explode into a major economic crisis.?The big story in India and China in the next five years is whether or not they can get their reform act together. We should all pray they do.

Sphero's Augmented Reality Engine gets fully realized in Sharky the Beaver (video)

Been keeping up to date with the quirky robotic ball named Sphero? We've been wondering when its Augmented Reality Engine would finalize into a full-fledged app since we first witnessed it as E3 as a simple 2D tech demo. Well, Today is the day that this Android and iOS-controlled ball makes it first official-release steps into the world of AR -- the engine has grown up, powering Orbotix's latest free app, Sharky the Beaver. While the game itself is still admittedly silly and demo-like since we saw an early adaptation in August, there's no question that the AGR is now is a polished state.

As a refresher, unlike other implementations that require a stationary marker, Sphero serves as one that can move around your area, while also relaying information about its position. The 3D character on screen rotates its directions as you spin Sphero, and, as you can see above, it even allows you to pick the ball up while it's being tracked. The frame-rate of tracking in the app itself looked very smooth, and it does an admirable job keeping track of the ball, even if it ends up off-screen. At the point, gameplay is limited to flicking cupcakes on the ground that Sharky goes to automatically, and there's no word on if and when we'll see the features shown off in the early version (namely, the part where the Sharky part of the name was actually a key element, as you chased people on-screen to get their cupcakes). All in all, we're more curious than anything to see what else the folks at Orbotix will come up with in the realm of AR -- for more in the meantime, check out the our video hands-on after the break.

They once again came up short as big chalk against Buffalo in a 37-31 win laying -13.5 points. That makes New England 0-3 ATS in that role this season including an outright loss to Arizona. The Patriots just aren?t playing anything close to the level of championship caliber defense right now to be trusted laying double-digits. The Pats run defense allowed over 100 yards to the Bills and the secondary was picked apart by Ryan Fitzpatrick who threw for 337 passing yards. Defensive stats like that won?t cash many tickets in that kind of price range. The Philadelphia Eagles downward spiral continued on Sunday. They are a dead team walking right now. The body language is awful. Head coach Andy Reid is firmly on the hot seat. The offensive line can't protect anyone from teeing off on ailing quarterback Michael Vick. The run game has been non-existent. The defense has been a sieve in recent weeks giving up big plays against both the pass and the run. They?ve been guilty of taking numerous defensive holding, illegal contact and PI penalties setting up opposing offenses in great field position. There isn't a single redeeming quality about the Eagles right now and Vick is out at least for this week meaning that Nick Foles will make his first start of the season at Washington who comes in off of a bye. How bad has it been for Philly? Well not only are they just 3-6 SU this season but those three against Cleveland, Baltimore and the NY Giants came by a combined four points! The Eagles are that close from being a winless team and in line for the #1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft! When you?re hot, you?re hot! Denver certainly fits that bill right now. After an up and down start to their season, the Broncos have gone on a torrid 5-1 SU and ATS roll dating back to the end of September. Amazingly they crushed the pointspread by a combined 72 points in those five wins! Denver is quickly becoming one of the most popular teams for the public to bet on and that likely won?t stop until they lose or fail to cover. The Broncos are flexing their recent dominance with an offense that is in terrific form. Peyton Manning looks like his vintage self and has quickly developed chemistry with Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and the rest of the Denver receiving corps and is complemented by a strong rushing attack with Willis McGahee. The defense continues to play solid in the secondary and get pressure on opposing quarterbacks up front with Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil leading the charge. Rob Veno?s Power Rating: Oregon -22 A few weeks back I marked down in my notes to play against Stanford when they face up-tempo offenses. I did this on the heels of their overtime win over Arizona. In that game, the Cardinal were absolutely gashed defensively as the Wildcats rolled up 617 yards. Stanford was completely gassed in the second half as the Wildcats did whatever they wanted offensively. Since that time, Stanford has faced nothing but sub-par and/or pro-style offenses ? the exact profile that their defense has historically thrived against. ? Stanford's Last Five Opponents - National Rank, Total Offense? Oregon State - 58th, 408.8 ypg? Colorado - 114th, 306.8 ypg? Washington State - 92nd, 370.4 ypg? California - 66th, 397.5 ypg? Notre Dame - 60th, 403.3 ypg? Oregon - 3rd, 562.6 ypg So here we are this weekend with Stanford traveling to face an Oregon squad that like Arizona runs a crazy-fast, up-tempo offense. The difference is not only are the Ducks stronger offensively than the Wildcats, they are also significantly better defensively. While Arizona allows 0.444 points per play (91st nationally), Oregon checks in at 26th at 0.293. Back to Stanford's struggles against up-tempo offenses. In last year's bowl game against Oklahoma State, the Cardinal allowed 7.2 yards per play and 41 points. Their saving grace was Andrew Luck's 27-of-31, 347 yard performance. During the regular season, and undefeated at the time, Stanford played host to the Ducks and were destroyed 53-30. This team travels well, huge family/fans support and one would have to think a there are plenty of preparations going on rather than worrying about quarterback David Fales and the Spartans. Submitted by Teddy CoversNovember is the time in the NFL where we separate contenders from pretenders. Last week, I focused on the NFC; this week, I?ll turn to the AFC. Unfortunately, the Colts and Steelers didn?t play on Sunday, and the Texans? Sunday Night game was played in weather conditions that affected the game (and the game plan) significantly. Who among the rest can challenge for AFC supremacy? Read on to find out. Denver Broncos - Another slow start for a West Coast team traveling East; certainly not unusual. Slow starts have been a consistent problem for Denver all year. We saw them fall behind by three scores when they faced Atlanta, Houston and San Diego ? three of the tougher foes they've faced. But slow starts are about the only fault I can find with this team right now. We already know how good Denver?s offense can be, and they score touchdowns : 22 TDs in 32 red zone possessions. The Broncos have an elite quarterback, a strong running game and playmaking WR's - they can trade points with anybody. This team's postseason future rests on the strength (or weakness) of their stop unit; a unit that has stepped up at times and gotten torched many other times. What does this defense do well? First, they make in-game adjustments. I?m very impressed with this coaching staff, as Manning was when he decided to play for Denver. This pass rush is getting to the quarterback ? Von Miller was an absolute beast in this ballgame, but he was one of six different defenders to pull Cam Newton to the turf. This secondary is turning bad throws into interceptions. The linebacking corps is stuffing the run. If the D continues to play like this, I?d make Denver the favorite to reach the Super Bowl. San Diego Chargers ? I felt completely schizophrenic writing about Chargers QB Philip Rivers, a mystifying presence on the field these days. Rivers was brilliant in this ballgame, leading the team on three 80-yard touchdown drives before halftime. After going 18-of-20 passing against the Chiefs last Thursday, Rivers only threw two incomplete passes before halftime here, demonstrating truly impressive accuracy.? ?? Rivers is a downfield thrower, not a dink and dunker ? a good thing. He's made his living in the NFL chucking the ball up and letting his receivers make plays on the ball, also a good thing. This receiving corps still has plenty of big play talent ? look no further than Danario Alexander?s 80-yard catch-and-run TD on the opening drive. Antonio Gates, Malcolm Floyd and Eddie Royal all had receptions of 20 yards or longer too. Yet for every good thing I wrote about Rivers, there was the flip side of the coin ? when Rivers makes mistakes, he makes huge mistakes, like his careless pick six that was the difference in the ballgame. Brilliance alternating with incompetence is no recipe for winning a Super Bowl. The Chargers defense dominated a good portion of this game. But once again, the running game sputtered ? Ryan Matthews hasn't exactly filled LT's shoes. And perhaps most of all, Norv Turner's lack of attention to special teams has been a problem for this organization since he's been here. Another bad miscue ? this time a blocked punt returned for a touchdown ? turned the momentum of this game. When that was followed by Rivers pick six, it was lights out for San Diego today? and probably for their season as well. Miami Dolphins - Last week, this pass defense was torched by Andrew Luck. I'm impressed with the week-to-week adjustments from the coaching staff. We saw more blitzing today, effective blitzing that wreaked havoc in the Titans backfield, dramatically improving the performance in the secondary. In the red zone, this defense has stiffened all year, swarming to the football and making both yards and points very difficult to come by. However, Miami?s defense was not effective in the red zone today, giving up fairly easy TDs on each of the Titans first two possessions. This offense is a long way from being playoff caliber on a weekly basis. Ryan Tannehill has had some great games this year, but he's had some real clunkers too. One thing is for certain ? if this team can?t run, they can't win. Trailing by three TD's early certainly takes the running game largely out of the equation ? Miami is not a 'rally back from way behind' type team like Detroit or Denver. The weakness of this receiving corps was on full display today ? Tannehill didn?t complete a pass longer than 17 yards all afternoon. This offense sure could use a deep threat playmaker ? you know, like Brandon Marshall who they dumped this past offseason. New England Patriots - This offense is pretty close to being unstoppable when the opposing defense can't create a pass rush ? Tom Brady, with time, is as accurate as it gets. I still don't love this receiving corps without both Hernandez and Gronkowski available ? when an aging Deion Branch is a go-to guy, it speaks volumes about the lack of size on the outside. But frankly, that's just nitpicking ? this is an elite level offense just as it has been for the better part of the last decade, particularly when they've got Stephen Ridley and the running game working too. That's a big part of the reason why the Pats have been relatively good as chalk in every recent season -- weaker defenses have no chance to shut them down. This stat probably sums it up best ? New England?s offense has only eight 'three and out's' all year (only one today), by far the best in the NFL. But the Pats postseason success is going to rest on the shoulders of their defense; an inconsistent unit once again this year. They were certainly not at their best today ? Belichick was so disgusted he made the rare move of not being aggressive in the final minute before halftime; willing to let the clock run out without a single downfield throw. This defensive line got abused today, completely unable to control the line of scrimmage. I?ll give them credit for forcing a pair of red zone turnovers with the game on the line in the fourth quarter. But when this offense scores 37 against a team like Buffalo, they shouldn?t be desperately trying to hang on for the win in the closing seconds. Baltimore Ravens - This offense has a completely different level of execution at home compared to when they play on the road; just like last year. There's a reason Baltimore has won 15 straight and 20 of their last 21 home games; 33-5 SU at home in the five years of John Harbaugh?s tenure. QB Joe Flacco simply has a very different comfort level on this field. I'd expect that from a rookie or a second year player; not from a veteran like Flacco. The results don't lie ? look at these point totals: 44, 31, 23, 31 and 55 at home this year, compared to 23, 9, 13 and 25 in their four road games. If this team is going to go to the Super Bowl, they?ll need as many home playoff games as they can get after playing a whopping eight road playoff games compared to only one home playoff game over the past four seasons.? ?? But the most impressive thing about Baltimore?s two games since their pre-bye week disaster at Houston has been the defensive improvement for an injury riddled stop unit. Here against Oakland, they got pressure on Carson Palmer consistently, created turnovers, stuffed the run and with the exception of a missed tackle on a Raiders long TD pass, were fundamentally sound all afternoon. ABC Adapting Disney Theme-Park Ride for "Big Thunder Mountain" Pilot

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - ABC found ratings success by adapting Disney's finest fairy tales into the one-hour drama series "Once Upon a Time," so it's not surprising that the network has turned to a theme-park ride from its parent company for inspiration as well.

Popular roller coaster Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is being adapted for a television pilot by the Disney-owned network, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.

Chris Morgan ("Wanted," "Fast Five") will co-write the story with "Ice Age: Continental Drift's" Jason Fuchs, who will write the teleplay. ABC has ordered a script from ABC Studios, the individual said.

No word on what the show will have in common with the ride, but if it sticks with the theme presented to visitors at parks in California, Florida, Paris and Tokyo, it should have something to do with a mining town being destroyed by a natural disaster after settlers desecrate sacred Native American land.

Two other film projects have been developed based on Disney rides, "Pirates of the Caribbean" and 2003's not-equally-successful "The Haunted Mansion."

Morgan is represented by ICM Partners and McKuin Frankel, while Fuchs is repped by WME and Brookside and Bloom Hergott.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news on "Big Thunder Mountain."
