Such bar features are thought to act as mechanisms that channel gas from the spiral arms to the centre, enhancing star formation there.
Around the outside of the galaxy many much fainter and more distant galaxies can also be seen. Some even shine right through the disc of NGC 1187 itself. Their mostly reddish hues contrast with the pale blue star clusters of the much closer object.
NGC 1187 looks tranquil and unchanging, but it has hosted two supernovae explosions since 1982. A supernova is a violent stellar explosion, resulting from the death of either a massive star or a white dwarf in a binary system [2]. Supernovae are amongst the most energetic events in the Universe and are so bright that they often briefly outshine an entire galaxy before fading from view over several weeks or months. During this short period a supernova can radiate as much energy as the Sun is expected to emit over its entire life span.
In October 1982, the first supernova seen in NGC 1187 SN 1982R [3] was discovered at ESO's La Silla Observatory and more recently, in 2007, the amateur astronomer Berto Monard in South Africa spotted another supernova in this galaxy SN 2007Y. A team of astronomers subsequently performed a detailed study and monitored SN 2007Y for about a year using many different telescopes [4]. This new image of NGC 1187 was created from observations taken as part of this study and the supernova can be seen, long after the time of maximum brightness, near the bottom of the image.
These data were acquired using the FORS1 instrument attached to the ESO's Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile.

Investors are looking ahead to the Federal Reserve?s statement on interest rates Wednesday.
Central bankers are likely to show that they are ready to act to support a weakening U.S. economy, but will stop short of aggressive measures for now.
The market posted its biggest two-day percentage gain to close out last week on increased expectations both the Fed and the European Central Bank will plan further actions to stimulate their respective economies at meetings this week, but the index has stalled the last two sessions as it reached levels not seen since early May.
At 10 a.m. ET, the Commerce Department will release June construction spending and the Institute for Supply Management will release its July manufacturing index. Economists in a Reuters survey forecast construction spending to rise 0.4 percent and a 50.2 ISM reading.
China's official factory purchasing managers' index edged down to an eight-month low of 50.1 in July from 50.2 in June, suggesting the sector is barely growing, while a rival HSBC survey indicated the more market-sensitive private sector is starting to recover.
MasterCard, the world's second-largest credit and debit card processing network, is expected to post a higher second-quarter profit as more people across the globe use cards instead of cash. Other major companies announcing results include Metlife, Prudential Financial Inc and Tesoro Corp.
According to Thomson Reuters data through Tuesday morning, of the 321 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported second-quarter earnings to date, 67.3 percent have reported earnings above analysts' expectations. Over the past four quarters, the average beat rate is 68 percent.

Murray had started his bid for Olympic gold in superb form, but Baghdatis pushed him hard in the Wimbledon third round last month and the world number 44 proved a tough opponent again at the same stage of the Games.
In windy conditions on Centre Court, Murray looked in danger of a shock defeat as the world number four was out-played in the first set.
But the Scot, beaten in this year's Wimbledon final by Federer, finally found enough momentum to edge through to a last-eight clash with Spanish 11th seed Nicolas Almagro, who defeated Belgium's Steve Darcis 7-5, 6-3.
"I was struggling in the first set. Guys like Marcos, he's ranked 40 or 50 in the world, but when he plays his best tennis, he's so, so tough to beat," Murray said.
"That's why you can't really afford slow starts. I was lucky to get away with it today."
Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro, seeded eighth, also advanced to the quarter-finals, beating French 12th seed Gilles Simon 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Argentina's del Potro will play Japan's Kei Nishikori, who shocked Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 in a match which finished under the floodlit Centre Court roof after starting outdoors on Court 14.
