Work Life, Best Life | The Best Life Blog: Fitness, Weight-Loss and ...

Posted By Bob Greene on September 6, 2012

Unhappy or unfulfilled with your job? Feeling overwhelmed and underappreciated by your boss? Is office stress spilling over into your family life or social life? When your work life is out of balance, you feel it in all areas of your life.

For instance, if you?re overloaded at work, you may be more short-tempered with family when you get home. You may handle the stress of a big work project by running to the vending machine for some relief. Or perhaps you have trouble setting boundaries with a coworker, so you try to make up for it by pulling back from friends. You get the point?your relationships, your diet, your fitness are all affected by your job.

Your health could also pay the price: Studies show that work stress can affect your immune system and increase the risk for a variety of illnesses from cancer to heart disease. A recent study suggests that it can even speed the aging process.

If you?re feeling stressed by or unfulfilled in your job, it?s important to identify the cause and create a plan to deal with it. You may have to find a way to say no to a pushy coworker or leave the office early one night a week. Perhaps you?ll have to talk to your boss about your workload or maybe explore other job opportunities.

Bottom line: You can?t live your best life unless you?re doing well in all the areas that are important to you, work included. When you?re able to find joy and satisfaction in your work life, it will spill over into other parts of your life. That?s the whole point of the Circle of Life exercise, which I?ve blogged about before. If you haven?t done it in a while, you might want to do it again as a quick refresher.

This month, we?ll be offering tips and tricks on our blog to help you understand how your career fits into your best life. To get you started, try this worksheet to learn how you can tie your career goals into your health goals.

Does your job help or hinder your efforts to live your best life?
